The Future of Barcodes Is Almost Here - Are you ready for GS1 Sunrise 2027?

By 2027, the way we scan and identify products will be transformed. The initiative known as GS1 Sunrise 2027 marks a global shift from traditional one-dimensional barcodes (like UPC or EAN) to advanced two-dimensional codes such as GS1-enabled QR codes.

But what is GS1 Sunrise? GS1, the international body that sets barcode standards, has identified 2027 as the year when retailers worldwide will be ready to process 2D barcodes at checkout. Unlike the classic linear codes that only carry a product identifier, 2D barcodes can store far more information, from batch numbers and expiry dates to sustainability details and safety alerts, giving consumers, businesses, and regulators instant access to richer product data.

This transition is driven by growing demand for transparency. Research shows that most shoppers want clear product information when making purchasing decisions, and many are more likely to buy items with scannable QR codes that provide extra details. ‘77% of consumers say product information is important when making a purchase, and 79% are more likely to purchase products with a scannable barcode/QR code that provides additional product information’ - GS1 US published survey findings.

At the same time, supply chains benefit from smarter tracking and tracing, which reduces waste and enhances safety. Regulatory pressures in areas like food safety, pharmaceuticals, and sustainability also make 2D barcodes a practical solution for compliance.

Retailers will need to update their scanning equipment and systems to handle 2D codes. Packaging will gradually adapt to include GS1-powered QR codes, which may eventually replace traditional barcodes. During the transition, both 1D and 2D codes will appear side by side to ensure smooth operations across industries.

GS1 Sunrise 2027 represents more than just a technology update,  it’s a fundamental change in how products are identified and understood. Businesses that embrace 2D barcodes will be able to offer deeper product insights, streamline supply chains, and strengthen consumer trust.

The countdown has begun. By 2027, barcodes will evolve from simple price markers into gateways to transparent and informative insights into products, giving shoppers instant access to details that matter most.
